Vegas, ’47

The Youtuber bluntly known as ‘Vintage Las Vegas’ has posted a very cool 2 minutes of home movie-ish footage of a long dead Las Vegas. Shot in 1947, this is a lush and low-key Vegas, a western outpost, very much Bugsy Siegel’s frontier town. Does any of this even look vaguely familiar to you? Not to me. Last time I was there I was mostly focused on the fact that they still allow people to smoke in the casinos which I somewhat naively found offensive and stunning. But I guess cigarettes are the least of people’s problems if they like to go to a place and sit in a windowless and ugly environment playing with slot machines and cards. The above Vegas hardly hints at what was to come in only a few years. Enjoy…
