19 SECONDS OF 1928

The famous (in her day) nightclub hostess/chanteuse Texas Guinan was captured on film on several occasions, the most elaborate of which was a feature she starred in called ‘Queen Of The Nightclubs’. Shot in 1928, it was likely the best and most detailed view of the true look, tone and style of late 1920s New York City nightlife as had ever been captured. Alas, the film is lost…except for the above 19 seconds. (The soundtrack for the entire film exists apparently–it was a Vitaphone talkie which meant the sound was on separate discs). These precious 19 seconds exist because they were repurposed into a 1932 Warner Brothers film called ‘Winner Take All’. What we see here is a truly unbelievable scene–the madness of the era and its exhaustingly frantic pace is fully on view. There’s also an original trailer for the film which is posted below. Alas, move trailers were still in their infancy and they didn’t think include any actual images from the film itself. Still, as curio’s go it’s a real .curiosity…
