BOGDANOVICH ON ‘THE THIRD MAN’

Here’s a nice little clip of Peter Bogdanovich discussing ‘The Third Man’, Carol Reed and Orson Welles. I was honored to be friends with Peter for twenty years and always loved his impressions of people. Here he ‘does’ Orson Welles talking about how great the role of Harry Lime was precisely because he barely appears in the film, though he’s spoken of throughout the entire thing. It’s not really a full-on impersonation of Welles but its exactly what the word ‘impression’ means–it’s Peter giving us his take on Orson’s personality with a little of Orson’s accent and delivery thrown in. Peter also did a very good James Stewart impression and used it to tell a Stewart story that perfectly captures the vanity of many movie stars. Apparently Peter had seen ‘On Golden Pond’ on Broadway and thought it would make a great movie, with Stewart in the leading role. He got Stewart to see the show then called him up and asked him what he thought of it. “I think you’d be wonderful in it, Jimmy”, said Peter. Stewart angrily answered “Thanks a lot! The guy is eighty years old!” At the time, James Stewart was 79.
