On Monday I posted a nifty ‘March Of Time’ newsreel featurette about the nightclubs of the 1940s. Here’s another in the same series, this time tracing the history of the recording industry. It’s got some fun stuff in it–a recreation of an acoustic recording session (where musicians recorded into a horn) prior to the days of electric recording (when they started using microphones), some funny shots of young Buddy Rich, other musicians too numerous to mention (in other words I watched this a few days ago, failed to take notes and now can’t remember who they are) and some cool shots of early rare records shops and the geeks–I mean collectors–of the past who haunted them. Oddly, no black musicians appear until the end of the thirty minute doc–read the comments below the video for some very amusing and cranky observations on what the film gets wrong. Still, it’s a nice little time capsule and a better way to spend a little Friday afternoon time than listening to more stories concerning the rot at the center of the world. You know what I’m talking about…
