THE BOBBY-HOP

Whenever I find myself in a state of general torpor, phlegmaticism or simple crappiness there are several go-to videos that I –er–go to. One of them is today’s clip–Bobby Van’s hopping “Take Me To Broadway” dance from “Small Town Girl” (1954). Conceived and directed by Busby Berekely. this extrordianry feat of athleticism, choreography, camera movement and sheer ingenuity is shot in four separate camera set-ups, each more beautifully developed and executed than the next. (Or the prior. Take your pick). I can’t imagine how many tries each one took to coordinate all the elements and to have them each land just at the right moment, but I assume Van’s knees were likely shot for life afterwards. Enjoy the clip and promise yourself not to turn the news back on for at least two hours after you’ve watched this joyous three minutes of cinema.
