Here’s a continuation of yesterday’s reel of commercials, station I.D.s, intros and outros etc. from a 1967 CBS summer replacement show called ‘Away We Go’. There are almost no repeat commercials which makes for fresh, enjoyable views of what our culture looked and sounded like in that now-distant year. The animated ad for Alka-Seltzer at the top of the reel is priceless. The guy who’s pissed off that his wife invited company over because he’s secretly nervous that his underarms will smell bad is a fascinating look into an ad agencies ‘creatives’ having a very difficult time trying to figure out a new angle on selling their product. I love the way the station I.D. guy announces a movie airing later that night, but only mentions the stars name and not the movie (‘Alec Guiness tonight at 11:30!’). I rarely watch television–outside of sports and an hour or so of news I just can’t get interested in most series, be they streaming or network. But the fall 1967 line-up looks very enticing and if I happen to stumble upon a time machine which takes me back to the year when I turned three years of age I’ll probably become the classic lump on the couch watching the ‘boob-tube’ as it was derisively called back then. Now staring at the TV all the time is called ‘bingeing’ and is widely accepted as a culturally important activity to pursue. Personally I think spending the whole weekend watching every episode of a show sounds like the very definition of clinical depression. But I’ve never been one who fit in with the times I live in, so why complain?

Hey ! I am the one who had Obsolete Video do the transfers from vintage reel to reel video of all of these shows .
I have the original reels from Buddy Greco’s personal archives that he recorded with one of the very first ” portable ” 200lb home video recorders ! Buddy was the star along with George Carlin and Buddy Rich and lots of great guest stars ! I am using tons of footage from the 15 one hour shows in my documentary on Buddy Greco ! We are in the middle of our first rough cut and it is really coming together and we have a great 3 minute sizzle reel as well .
