One of the distressing things about nerding-out on vintage airplane videos are the soundtracks one has to endure. Either the person who posted the footage of the lovely old planes plasters ‘Top Gun’ style junk-rock over the images or they err in the other direction, maintaining the ‘purity’ of the engine noise which frankly is a snooze (at least in my book). All you have to do to truly appreciate views of old airplanes (and I’m specifically thinking of new footage of old planes, not old footage of the planes when they were young) is find either some appropriate classical music or period dance band stuff. The footage takes on a whole new life. If you eliminate the color from your screen it sometimes gets even better. Try rolling the above footage of some lovely Piper Cubs with the sound off. At the same time play the below video with its superb collection of 20s/early 30s popular hits of the day.
