CAMERA IN THE SKY

A couple of months ago I posted about Howard Hawks 1939 movie ‘Only Angels Have Wings’. The discussion largely centered on the magnificent aerial photography by Elmer Dyer. It turns out that the Criterion Collection has included the film in their august DVD pantheon of classic cinema and provided a brief, highly informative mini-doc on how the shots were achieved. The cameraman for the flying scenes was Elmer Dyer, who specialized in this area, and the doc shows not only how the shots were achieved but also the beyond-nifty camera that was used specifically for shooting from plane to plane. Take a look. At five minutes, it’s a lot better than many of the longer films that find their way into the pretentious and self-serious Criterion Collection.
