Here’s a terrific look at the auto races of the 1920s. There’s a wipe out that’s awfully similar to the terrifying one I posted yesterday which occurred this past weekend, a mere one-hundred years later from the one in today’s video. Aside from the automobiles, the race looks pretty much the same. Much like watching old football games, the game itself is unchanging, it’s the ferocity of it that’s different. Still, these cars and the speeds they were achieving must have been just as thrilling and terrifying as modern day Nascar races. The footage is silent (it’s also not clear the exact year it was shot–my guess is the early half of the decade) so I’ve provided the famous Bix Beiderbecke recording of ‘Ostrich Walk’ below. Just cue up the song, making sure you’re past the commercial at the beginning. Then his play on both videos and voila–you’ll be experiencing a day at the races, 1920s style.
