It’s Friday night, August 6th, 1982. You’re watching The Tonight Show. Johnny Carson introduces a new comic who’s making his first appearance not only on Carson but on network television. Carson says something cryptic about how the audience is about to see something…unusual. And then Steven Wright comes out and absolutely kills. It helps to remember that his sort of humor was very coffee-house at the time and not at all known by a typical Carson-watcher, who considered Biuddy Hackett the height of innovation. Wright gives a terrific performance and gets invited over to the vaunted couch to chat with Johnny. The ensuing few minutes is so uncomfortable that it actually winds up being quite funny in its own way. Stay with it.

Great find, Raymond!
Were there coffee houses in 1982???
Coffee houses have a surprisingly long history. I dug this up–it’s a good read.
