Yesterday I posted about the Steve McQueen 1971 race car epic ‘LeMans’. But before that film was made there was John Frankenheimer’s ‘Grand Prix’ (1966), a movie that from the looks of the trailer is better than the McQueen movie. Having said that, I should know better to base an opinion of a movie on the trailer. Possibly part of my guess is because the McQueen movie was such a disaster in the making with McQueen being a notoriously distasteful presence. ‘Grand Prix’ has James Garner at the center of it–and who can ever imagine James Garner as anything but a nice guy to share a cocktail and a meal with. ( By the way, for all I know Garner was a bigger prick than McQueen). Here’s an excellent Wikipedia entry about the making of Grand Prix’. I’ve yet to see either movie but certainly plan to, given my new interest in all things motor sport. Unless, of course, I lose interest in all things motor sport before getting around to watching two movies about all things motor sport…
