HUSTON UNDER A VOLCANO

Here’s a one-hour doc about the making of John Huston’s 1984 adaptation of Malcolm Lowry’s ‘Under The Volcano’. Actually it’s less a doc than it is a collection of footage gathered on the set and put it into a semblance of order, as if it were the initial assembly of a doc that wasn’t completed. This isn’t a complaint–it actually makes the whole thing seem more friendly and informal, as if you were visiting the set and observing the goings-ons. This is the version of Huston that I met a few years earlier (in 1981), the craggy’ faced, bearded man who wore white valour jumpsuits and who no longer smoked but instead wheezed a good bit. Still he had his very commanding presence and was both courtly and just slightly menacing. At 29 minutes he goes into a riff on God which a must-see. I haven’t seen the movie in years but may give it a peek this weekend, if for nothing else the performances of Finney and Jacquline Bisset. Huston’s directing is, I’m sure, crisp and unfussy as usual. The brothel scene as captured in a behind-the-scenes look, with real brothel-workers playing themselves and in a moment of icky playfulness cavorting with a delighted Huston, promises to be as unsexy and sad as those scenes always are. Maybe that’s the point…
