Last Friday I posted the terrific ‘Running Wild’ sequence from ‘Some Like It Hot’, featuring a wildly sensuous vocal/dance performance by Marilyn and way too many cutaways to Jack Lemmon. In spite of the great praise she received in that incredibly successful film, there appear to have been those who agreed with me that more Marilyn performing (and less comic relief watching) could only be a good thing. And thus we come to her next movie, the bluntly titled ‘Lets Make Love’ (1960).
I won’t bother slogging through the various production problems that plagued the movie--click here for its rather exhaustive but quite interesting Wikipedia entry–but suffice to say it was a disaster in production and only a moderate success upon release. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the whole thing–the movie belongs to my childhood viewing of afternoon ABC movie shows where two hour movies were eviscertted in order to jam in half an hour of commercials. I do, however, remember the above number, Marilyn’s beyond awesome rendition of Cole Porter’s ‘My Heart Belongs To Daddy.’ Try to put yourself in the mind of a thirteen year old watching this. Or perhaps it’s better not to.
Now, the good news is you can watch this without watching the whole silly film. The bad news is that for some unfathomable reason, the YouTuber who posted this didn’t bother to show the whole clip. The clip ends at the songs climax and I promise you it will piss you off. I can’t find another version of this online, though, so while I would normally pass on posting something so stupidly incomplete, I’m instead grateful to have this version despite the annoying ending. “Let’s Make Love’ was Marilyn’s penultimate film–‘The Misfits’ followed and the incomplete ‘Something Gotta Give’ came after that. After that, the rest is history of the most depressing sort…
