ON SET WITH JOHN HUSTON

Humphrey Bogart called him ‘the monster’ (with great affection, of course). Women found him wildly attractive (even though he treated them rather dreadfully, being proudly ‘multi-amorous’ long before the New York Times wrote admiring articles about threesomes buying and renovation multi-amorous brownstones in Brooklyn). But I digress. John Huston was a charismatic, inspiring presence on the set and the muscular, assured work that actors delivered in his films attests to this. Here’s a marvelous mini-doc showing Huston on the set of three of his movies–‘The Night Of The Iguana’, ‘Under The Volcano’ and ‘A Walk With Love and Death’. It’s interesting to see his low-key nature with actors (except for his daughter Anjelica at about the 23 minute mark) and the simplicity of his direction. Which reminds me of a Huston story that I’ve always loved: he’s directing ‘Prizzi’s Honor’ and tells Kathleen Turner to exit through a particular doorway. Turner says: ‘I think I’d go into the other room first to have a look, then exit.” Huston replied: “You can go anywhere you like, darling, but it won’t be in the movie.” Ah, to have the directorial nerve…
