SUPERMARKET SOUNDS

Yesterday I posted an hour of Muzak called ‘Sounds of the Department Store’. Today we listen to another 90 minutes of this gorgeous old stuff, this time with images largely picturing supermarkets of yore. According to the YouTube poster these are: More great tunes from Bruton and other classic music libraries. Recorded onto a 1973 Scotch High Energy cassette for that warm tone with some hiss to simulate a foggy memory of times past. Ah, cassette tapes. My first love before my Super 8mm camera was my Panasonic tape recorder. And tapes were the life blood of any cassette enthusiast–what a delicious a treat it was to open a fresh package of Scotch or Ampex cassettes! In fact, I used to take the Panasonic with me when accompanying my mother to the supermarket and attempt to record the Muzak, placing the recorder (with built in mic) in the shopping cart, thus capturing the aura of the Gelson’s on Laurenl Canyon and Magnolia Blvd. And then there was KJOI, an LA radio station that played the stuff non-stop and which I’d race home from school to listen to.; But that’s a tale for another time…
