WELCOME TO 1967 VIA KNXT

Here’s a twelve minute reel of intros, outros, station ID’s and commercials from a 1967 broadcast over the local Los Angeles CBS affiliate KNEXT. They appear to be part of an hour long summer replacement show called ‘Away We Go’ which features an awfully enticing cast–Buddy Greco, George Carlin, The Fifth Dimension, Rodney Dangerfield etc. (The show’s title derives from the fact that it was the replacement for Jackie Gleason’s variety show). There are plenty of cigarette commercials, a number of show promos and lots of ads for now defunct products. Sometimes it’s simply the unseen announcer informing us of upcoming programming–what a nice man to do so! I’ve always felt that old advertisements are one of the most effective ways to transport oneself back to a past cultural moment and this reel is a fascinating little trip to the world as it existed when I was three years old. One of the YouTube commenters mentions the odd fact that we DVR programs so we can speed through commercials but when they’re vintage ads they become more interesting than most things we currently view and we (or at least some of us) are happy to sit through ten or twenty minutes of them. To which I add: Yes.
