ORSON AND ELIA; A LOVE STORY (NOT)

In Elia Kazan’s1989 autobiography he reflects toward the end of the book on the pain of failure and missed opportunity in show-biz. Of course he manages to work Orson Welles into the story, bemoaning the lost promise blah blah blah. Then he bitchily references a tale of Welles keeping a whole roasted chicken inside his vast jacket pockets and grabbing it at intervals, gnawing on it, and generally making a pig of himself. What was he trying to fill? asks Kazan. It’s a pointless little aside and one wonders why Kazan felt compelled to go there.

Well, wonder no more. Above is a short clip of Welles discussing (if that’s the right word) Kazan, made shortly before Welles death in 1985. Kazan must have gotten wind of it and the chicken story was his posthumous revenge. I love Orson’s outrage and timing. There was no arguing with this man when he was in this mood…or perhaps ever.
