Boy, did Burt Lancaster not want to be in the room with the reporters asking him questions as seen in the above video. What was the occasion? I’m not sure but the year is 1989, which is when “Field of Dreams’ was released and Lancaster had a bit of a comeback. Why he agreed to show up for this press event even though he clearly was pissed off by the whole thing is a mystery. He is rude and uncooperative and exhibits an arrogant Jerry Lewis-style contempt directed at the people whose living depends on stars playing ball a little with the press. Perhaps it was his way of objecting to an inadequate hotel room the studio had given him. Maybe they held up his per diem until after the press conference even though he’d asked for it to be delivered prior to the event. Was his limo late in picking him up? Maybe it wasn’t a limo at all and he was forced to ride in a shuttle bus. There’s always the possibility a special diet request was ignored, and that he had to eat the egg salad sandwich rather than the turkey club he usually savored. Or maybe he was just a prick. I have to say that I find him intimidating from even this distance and would hate to be the director that needed to face him down.
