Here’s a ten-ish or so minute clip of John Huston being interviewed by Dick Cavett sometime in the early 70s. It’s always a pleasure to listen to Huston’s mellifluous baritone and marvel at his magnetism. And Dick, as usual, is erudite, goofy and quick in a very Ivy-League sort of way. (Does he remind anyone other than I of younger Conan?) The odd thing about this clip, though, is that while Huston is perfectly pleasant, he gives off a slight aura of not really wanting to be there. His answers are perfunctory. He doesn’t elaborate or get into the spirit of give-and-take with Dick, like a child who’s been told to perform for guests and who intentionally does only a passable job out of protest. (Ask me how I know). Nonetheless it’s a nice time-killer and what better way to spend our time than by killing it?
