All week I’ve been posting the dance/vocal stylings of William Frawley aka Fred Mertz. Monday’s post was from the mid-1930s. Today’s is a little over twenty years later but Frawley’s style remains impeccably his own. I don’t recall the story of this particular ‘I Love Lucy’ episode but judging by Ricky’s reaction to their appearance this was clearly something he didn’t expect. Yes, yes, Frawley and Vance didn’t get along professionally–she was appalled to be cast as the wife of someone who was thirty years older than her in real life. Frawley apparently got wind of her displeasure and made sure to make her as uncomfortable as possible. Certainly he roughs her up a bit in this number and one wonders what his breath smelled like, given his proximity to her face. Anyway, happy Dancin’ Frigging Friday. By the way, did you know the Mertz’s brownstone was located in the 600 block of East 68th street? That means that it was floating in the East River. As a kid I went in search of the building and was sorely disappointed to find that it didn’t exist–on land or sea…
