On Monday I posted a lovely song-and-dance number featuring William Frawley before he was Fred Mertz. Today we see an example of what used to happen when you became a big TV name; you got to make a record. Yes, William Frawley made an LP for Decca in 1957 called ‘Bill Frawley Sings the Old Ones’. Who knew? Here’s a single cut from that never-legendary recording session. It’s ‘Pretty Baby’ and believe me, it’s all you need to hear from this bizarre endeavor. Still, for ‘Lucy’ completists its an important piece of the Mertz puzzle. I wonder what Vivian Vance made of it? She and Frawley famously disliked each other and I can only imagine the contempt with which Vance–a serious and committed actress–viewed this peculiar project. Perhaps Desi produced it?
