AND THE BEST DIRECTOR OSCAR GOES TO…?

Last week I posted William Friedkin’s Oscar win for ‘The French Connection’ in 1972. The award was nicely presented by Natalie Wood, who was paired with legendary director Frank Capra. In 1978 the Academy had the good taste (believe it or not) to repeat this actress/legendary director bit again, this time with Cicely Tyson and the great King Vidor. (What a nice tradition. I suppose these days the veteran director would be someone along the lines of James Cameron? Ron Howard? I’m leaving out Scorcese since he’s a perpetual nominee). The nominees in 1978 were an impressive bunch as you’ll see. And all were seated awaiting their name to be called except one. Can you guess who?
