ANNIE HALL–er DIANE KEATON–WINS THE BEST ACTRESS OSCAR

Apropos of yesterday’s post, I was going to post the highly controversial Vanessa Redgrave Oscar acceptance speech from 1978 in which she criticizes Israel in a virulent and stinging speech that provoked boos and a scolding from Paddy Chayefsky. But you know what? The hell with it. Let’s end the week on a note of triumph–about a subject that none of us have on our mind. Here’s the 1978 Best Actress nominees (along with clips from the movies) culminating in Diane Keaton’s win for ‘Annie Hall’. (By the way , that’s Janet Gaynor along with Walter Matthau presenting the award). Keaton’s delightfully charming and gracious and one marvels at the high level of talent that was on display that year–Jane Fonda, Marsha Mason, Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine were her competition. Once again we’re expected to believe that Woody Allen was so busy playing ‘Muskrat Ramble’ at his nightclub on East 55th that he missed this moment. Believe it…or don’t…
