BENNY HILL + MICK JAGGER?

We never got to see any BBC 60’s Benny Hill when he hit the airwaves in America in ’77-’78, just the 70’s Thames. But we’re still blessed for it. The Thames Benny Hill wasn’t necessarily funny in any normal sense of the word but it was hilarious for being something we were stupid enough to watch and laugh at. In this sense Benny is a bit like Henny Youngman. There’s no real reason any Henny Youngman joke deserves to be laughed at–it’s more the fact that we’re submitting to his low-rent act that makes it art. Both comics make you complicit in their dopey routines–they’re bringing you down to a level you’d never normally stoop too and love the fact that we’re taking the trip willingly. The more they wickedly eye our degradation the funnier they are to us–‘got you, didn’t I?’ they seem to imply. To that end, dig the above clip of Benny doing his Mick Jagger impression from the 60s BBC show. I’ll leave the rest to him…
