Here’s a wonderful appearance by Charlie Callas on Jerry Lewis’s disastrous 1969 attempt at a variety/talk-show. Callas imitations include Rod Steiger–has anyone else even thought of doing Rod Steiger?–Cary Grant singing (one of the Youtube commenters points out that Callas’s Cary Grant impression sounds more like he’s doing Tony Curtis’s impression of Grant in ‘Some Like It Hot’), and an oddly convincing imitation of a pigeon being born. Lewis is an awful host–as uncharming on TV without a routine to resort to as he was in real life. Callas seems to make him laugh though, and the usual tension surrounding Jerry in any context outside of a movie dissapates quickly. Jerry proudly announces that he thought Callas was so funny when he first saw him that he gifted him with his first film role, a 1967 Jerry abomination called ‘The Big Mouth’. Thanks, pal…
