BUILDING THE EMPIRE STATE

Having just come from a doctor’s appointment on 31st Street between Park and Madison and thus having spied the lurking grandeur of the Empire State Building on nearby Fifth Avenue, I decided to search out the famously scary photographs of the workmen sauntering around the framework high in the sky while the place was under construction. As always, though, Youtube offered something even better, in this case a 20 minute doc showing different aspects of the construction of the building. The detail is fascinating but if its the guys putting their lives on the line by casually working on the upper reaches of the building that you’re looking for then skip to 14:30. You’ll be horrified and impressed. Interesting fact: the whole building took 13 months to build, which is one month longer than it took to do the renovation of my three-room apartment.
