GABLE + LOREN + SULLIVAN

In the late 1950s, Ed Sullivan took to doing on-set/on-location interviews as part of his television program’s offerings. Long ago I posted a visit he made to the ‘Fire Down Below’ set, featuring Robert Mitchum, Rita Hayworth and Jack Lemmon. Today we see Sullivan in Naples (or is it Capri?) on the set of ‘It Started In Naples’, starring Clark Gable and Sophia Loren. Both stars are charming and relaxed. The only problem with the interview is that it’s boring–and at a slim two and half minutes that’s really saying something. But puff pieces have always been puff pieces and the whole venture is saved by one rather extraordinary moment; Sullivan invokes Tennessee Wiliams in order to make a flagrant gay-bashing joke. That’s all I’m telling–you’ll hear it for yourself…
