JOAN JETT V. MARY TYLER MOORE–COMPARE AND CONTRAST

‘Love Is All Around’, the much loved theme from ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’, was written by Sonny Curtis who also wrote ‘I Fought The Law’, made famous by Bobby Fuller. If the difference between Mary and Bobby Fuller seems like a stark one then try this on for size: in 1996, Joan Jett covered the song and it gained such substantial radio play that it became the number one requested song without a supporting album. (Joan’s cover was used by the NCAA to promote the Women’s Final Four). My thanks to my dear friend Marc Myers of JazzWax for hipping me to Joan’s recording which I had no clue about. Click here for a charming look at Sonny Curtis recalling how he sold the iconic song to Mary Tyler Moore’s producers.
