LGBTQ ON FILM–SILENTLY

Here’s a  frustrating but fascinating reel highlighting a number of suggestive and alternative interactions between people from what one-hundred years later came to be known as the LGBTQ community. Aside from referencing some footage from pioneering German sexologistt Magnus Hirshfields scandalous 1927 ‘Laws Of Love’-an early ‘informational’  film on alternative sexuality–no more information is given about what films these clips are culled from. Nor is any context given–were the films for ‘alternative’ audiences (i.e.–forms of early tittilation-pornography)? Or do they come from daring mainstream films of the period? Annoying as this lack of information is, the reel still makes fascinating viewing and reminds us that there is truly nothing new under the sun and that, from the moment the motion picture was invented, there would always be a hunger to see what people were told they mustn’t see. Apparently the complete ‘Laws Of Love’ exists and is now available for viewing on the Internet Archive.
