MARTIN & KNOTTS or DEAN & DON; A COMEDY TEAM IN THE MAKING

Here’s a terrific sketch from a 1959 Dean Martin special featuring Dean and Don Knotts who plays the role of Frank Sinatra…sort of. The two are terrific together and one can only speculate what might have been if they’d teamed up for a couple of movies. By this point Dino’s post-Jerry career had taken off, as he proved himself a more than worthy actor in ‘Rio Bravo’, ‘The Young Lions’, ‘Some Came Running’ etc. Nonetheless he continued to crank out his share of dopey clinkers (most of them with his Rat Pack cronies) and it wouldn’t have been the oddest addition to his early-mid 1960s filmography to have teamed him with Knotts. I propose Norman Panama and Melvin Frank as the likely writer/directors, though perhaps Frank Tashlin might have stepped in for one. Oh well. This terrific routine will have to suffice. Note that this isn’t the immortal color NBC Dean show that began in 1965 and stretched boozily into 1974. All I can find about this one is this IMDB entry which makes no mention of Knotts but says that Mae West and Bob Hope were also guests. A subject for further research…
