PALM SPRINGS PARTY

I must confess to never having quite ‘gotten’ Palm Springs. I like it a little–the term ‘small doses’ was invented for the place as far as I’m concerned. But the deep and devoted love for the desert that its adherents–er–adhere to strikes me as perverse. The desert is defined by having less of everything; less water, less trees, less nature, less weather and seasons etc. And Palm Springs, a two-hour drive from Los Angeles, is odd in that it looks like LA (more or less) and attracts lots of people from LA who spend weekends there. People who live in L.A. but weekend in Palm Springs seem to me to be caught in a web of redundancy; more patios, more pools, more glass doors, more cars, more trendy restaurants etc. To be fair, Palm Springs is less junky than L.A., which has become a receptacle of crappy strip-malls, ugly parking lots, bad new buildings, beat-up old buildings and home invasions. Anyway let’s move on. Above is a quite charming early 1960s ‘pitch reel’ about the joys of Palm Springs that I think you’ll enjoy. That’s saying a lot since I enjoyed it quite a bit and look at my feelings about the desert. I can’t remember who coined the name for the place that I like the best; ‘Thirst’s End’. Maybe I did…
