POKER ON FILM (PT. 1)

I must admit to a complete lack of interest in the annoyingly retro-cool game of Poker. For me Poker belongs to the same crowd that reads Cigar Aficionado, professes to like small-batch Bourbon and Scotch and makes a big deal about betting on the Kentucky Derby. Having gotten that off my chest, I must say that scenes of poker games in movies are, for whatever reason, idiotically fun to watch. So let’s sample a few starting with the above from ‘Mississippi’ (1935) featuring W.C. Fields and–briefly–a young, fat Bing Crosby. Fields was a stage juggler of great repute for many years and its fun to see his dexterity when dealing the cards. Beyond that I have nothing left to say but…deal…
