Yesterday I posted a charming clip of legendary Portuguese filmmaker Manoel De Oliveira doing a delightful imitation of Chaplin dancing. He was was in his late 90s when it was filmed and it turns out it was not a one-off event. Above we see Manoel dancing with a group apparently knows as ‘Sweet and Tender.’ He is 99 years old and apparently in better shape then most younger directors are–certainly the ones who’ve made as many films as he did. The setting is a vaguely Euro looking location–perhaps its at the end of a film festival as there’s a ‘the crowds have vanished but we’re still here’ vibe. My big questions are: could he Samba? Could he do the Lindy Hop? And most importantly, did he prefer Gene Kelly over Fred Astaire or vice-versa? Only he knows…and he ain’t telling.
