Did you know that comedienne/puppeteer Shari Lewis was also a kick-ass dancer? I didn’t. Apparently, when Captain Kangaroo was looking the other way, Shari was busy dancing up a storm in secret. In 1964 she appeared on an unidentified TV variety show (I believe it’s ‘Broadway Tonight’ based on a little internet snooping around I did this AM) and did a routine that will knock your socks off (assuming you’re wearing socks). To quote one of the YouTuber comments: “Damn, she got MOVESSSSS.” She manages to combine four different styles of dance in a ridiculously fun routine that will likely be the best four minutes of your day. As for the puppetry I guess that was her bread and better. Something about the above performance reads to me like she was cutting loose and doing the thing that she maybe always really wanted to do. I could see her as a young Shirley MacLaine-type, especially if the project was ‘Sweet Charity’. ln which case those goddam puppets she had to share the stage with may well have been her least favorite collaborators…
