Here’s the wonderful climactic sword fight from the 1938 ‘Adventures oF Robin Hood’ starring Errol Flynn. This is something special as it really is two fights in one–a mass sword fight that breaks off into a private dual between Flynn and (who else?) Basil Rathbone. Hijinks ensue, of course, but you’ll also see the deft camera staging of Michael Curtiz as well the top notch scoring of Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The film actually credits two directors–William Keighley shares the credit with Curtiz–but if I know my Curtiz stuff, this is his work and not Keighley’s. Actually I have the Curtiz biography in the other room and could look it up if I had the time today but sadly (or perhaps fortunately) I don’t. Given the hundreds of films Curtiz directed, the bio is of course enormously long and it’s best read in conjunction with whichever Curtiz film you might happen to be watching. (There are about ten that I would consider essential but I won’t list them here). (At least not today). Happy stabbings!
