THE DEATH OF BOBBY FULLER; THE THICK PLOTTENS

Apropos of yesterday’s post featuring the short-lived Bobby Fuller singing ‘I Fought The Law’, above is more Bobby and his band. This time it’s from a pop & dance TV show called ‘Shivaree’ and features two of his other big tunes, ‘Let Her Dance’ and ‘Another Sad and Lonely Night’. Fuller’s death is so messed up, such a morass of conflicting information, that it behooves you to read this excellent summation of the tragic event. Was it his record company who murdered him in his car just days after taking out a life insurance policy on him? Who were the two armed men who went chasing after his bandmates? (They fled to El Paso, armed). Or was it an LSD experiment gone wrong that caused Fuller to douse himself with gasoline? Fuller had more in common with Rick Nelson (in my opinion) then with Buddy Holly who he’s frequently compared to, but his fresh and sincere presentation is still effective and charming. That’s the music business for you. To quote Hunter Thompson:

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”
