THE FLINTSTONES SMOKED WINSTONS?

I never knew there was a black and white version of ‘The Flintstones’. That’s no doubt because when the show aired in syndication in the 1970s (which is when I saw it) black and white was felt to be undesirable to the children who were watching the show. Far more worrisome, though, was the fact that the original sponsor of the show was Winston Cigarettes, who received a most prominent plug in the closing credits with Wilma lighting up at Fred’s behest. I’ve posted those original end credits above. Note the weird presence of a laugh track. Also, how was the flashing, glowing light advertising the Winston label supplied with electricity in these pre-historic times? Below I’ve posted the much more user-friendly opening and closing credits of the show. They’re slickly done and a delight to revisit after all these smoke-free years.
