THE GOOFY SINATRA

Let’s close this weeks Sinatra-bashing extravaganza with another goofy clip from his shaggy television variety series of the early 1950s, the boringly named ‘The Frank Sinatra Show’. In this clip he introduces the singer/comedienne Dagmar–somebody once said car bumpers were styled after Dagmar’s figure. Sinatra’s intro is embarrassing. He was always at his worst when he tried to be funny–I think one of the things he admired so much about Dean Martin was Dino’s effortless humor and the warmth he engendered from his audiences. Admired and loved as Sinatra was, I don’t think he ever came across to anyone as ‘warm’ or ‘funny’. His vibe was dramatic and emotional (at best), arrogant and humorless at worst. He introduces Dagmar with all the aplomb of your Uncle Joe introducing a surprise guest at an Elk’s dinner. He also appears to either be growing a moustache or, more likely, simply didn’t shave that day. The outline of it shows you what a moustached Sinatra would have looked like–basically a low-budget Gilbert Roland. Dagmar is quite a piece of work and her act is fun–which I can’t say about Sinatra in this low phase of his career. And now, the end is near…
