Why did I wake up this morning with the song from the Levi Jeans commercial (circa mid 1970s) playing in my head? And why did I find I could remember every word of the lyric? And why am I not surprised to see in the comments section that those who watched the above video also remember the entire thing and retain the same affection I do for the wacky singer and weird stop-motion photography featured in the ad? The ‘Haw-Haw’ Levi’s song was apparently inspired by the 1960 rockabilly hit version of ‘Mule Skinner Blues’, originally popularized by ‘The Fendermen’. (The original of course was Jimmy Rodger’s 1930 country classic). As for the ad campaign it was created by Mike Koelker, a legendary creative director and writer behind many iconic music-driven advertising campaigns. Above is the Levi’s ad. Below is the Fenderman’s recording which apparently got stuck in Koelker’s head, which resulted in a song that got stuck in a lot of kids heads who grew up watching TV in the 1970s, a club of which I was a charter member.
