WEEKEND STOOGEFEST

‘Spook Louder’ (1943) is the 69th short comedy made by The Three Stooges for Columbia Pictures. It was photographed from Friday, July 17th through Tuesday, July 21, 1942 and was released on Friday, April 2nd, 1943 (the 92nd day on the Gregorian calendar). This oddball hodgepodge of a short is told in a somewhat shoddy flashback structure in which the Stooges are first seen as door-to-door salesman (a typical set-up of that era) and somewhat randomly proceed to become involved in a haunted house scenario. Indeed, the script resembles nothing so much as several different scripts which, having had their pages ripped apart, simply had them thrown together again in no particular order. In answer to the (unasked) question ‘Who threw that final pie?’ I offer this response: either the Stooges did, or it was the first A.D. You’ll know what I’m talking about after you watch the short. Watch out for a little anti-Japanese wartime propaganda via the use of a slur that has thankfully long been retired…
