WEEKEND STOOGEFEST

‘Uncivil Warbirds’ (1946) is the 90th short comedy made by The Three Stooges for Columbia Pictures. It was photographed from Friday, August 24th through Tuesday, August 28th, 1945 and was released on Friday, March 29, 1946 (the 88th day of the Gregorian Calendar). This is ‘late’ Curly–after his first stroke but still able to perform at above half-speed unlike the short that follows this one (‘Monkey Businessmen’). In fact he even gives us the ‘drop to the ground and spin around’ routine–alas for the last time. The film itself is frankly poor, with flat gags and direction and the blackface segment does it no favors. But pay close attention to 8:25–8:30. What is it that Moe says whilst in that huddle? Is it what I think? If it is, why? And how the hell did they get away with it? Aside from that, the most notable thing about the film is the replacement of the usual ‘Three Blind Mice’ theme with a version of ‘Dixie’. Honestly I’m worn out after watching it and even the act of writing this is tiring me out. But in the interest of being Stooge Completists we must take the mediocre with the good…or, in the case of ‘Uncivil Warbirds’, the lousy with the lousier. On that note, happy Memorial Day weekend to y’all.
