7-UP: ANCHOR’S AWAY MEETS HOLDER?

Compare and contrast two different 7-Up ads from two different decades. Above, we see a retread of the famous Gene Kelly/Jerry the Mouse half live-acrtion half-animation dance routine–and quite well accomplished it is. Below we see the great Geoffrey Holder twenty-some years later shilling for the caffeine-free soda in a very charming one-take (except for a couple of beauty-shot soda inserts), no-frills monologue. One can sense Holder’s supreme professionalism and assume that, after nailing it on the first take, he calmly turned down the advertising agency’s request for a second ‘take with all sorts of alternate line readings, instead choosing to swan off the set, junk the can of soda and pour himself something more civilized in the limo on the way home…
