THE ‘FRESCA’ THING

Continuing our look at commercials for old soda brands–yesterday we watched some RC Cola ads–today lets focus on Fresca. Above are two commercials from the 1960s. In the first, the idea was to show icy, snowy weather environments in order to invoke Fresca’s icy, snowy refreshing taste. Was this a successful campaign? I can’t imagine how it could have been. The whole point of a soft drink is refreshment–thus a hot, tropical environment would be a suitable place to demonstrate much needed relief from a cool soda. The focus on snow merely makes me want a Swiss Miss hot chocolate drink. The second one is a more suitable try–much like one of yesterday’s RC Cola spots which was centered on stock car racing, this one is set in the world of speedboating and does a fine job of making me thirsty for a cool drink. By the way, have you ever had a Fresca? It looks and tastes like dishwater and benefits greatly from a healthy dose of Vodka being added to it.
