On Monday I promised to post only Fred Astaire items this week, featuring dancing partners who he only worked with once or twice. Yesterday I broke that promise by not posting anything. (It was a travel day so I’m allowed). Here’s another Fred/Rita number, ‘I’m Old Fashioned’, from ‘You Were Never Lovelier’ (1942). Jerome Robbins used this in a piece he choreographed for the New York City Ballet, which featured a ginormous screen projecting the sequence behind two NYCB members emulating the exact steps in front of it. It sounds simple but the effect was magically intricate and fascinating to behold.
