BACKSTOOGE WITH THE STAGES

Here’s a marvelous compilation of behind-the-scenes miscellany and interviews about and with The Three Stooges, spanning the late 1920s well into the 1970s. We see home movies of them as young chaps goofing around in the water at Coney Island; an odd promotional reel for a home movie camera that will be given away at theaters as a prize (this is from the 30s and features Curly); color home movie footage of the 1950s edition of the act, with Joe Besser, Moe and Larry and Maxine Gates messing around outside the Columbia Studios lot; a visit by a Stooge ‘Superfan’ to character actor Emil Sitka in the late 1970s; and most importantly some very rare interview footage with behind-the-camera Stooge associates. The legendary head of the Columbia Short Subjects unit and frequent Stooge director Jules White is interviewed, as is the director Edward Bernds and his frequent writing partner Ellwood Ullman. Two cameraman sit for a chat as well as several character actors. You may find it best to fast-forward through this 90 minute compilation and find what in particular interests you (for me it was the interviews) or you may just eat the entire meal. Or perhaps you’ll pass on the whole thing. The Stooges are not for everybody, as I found out while posting a Stooge short every weekend for about two years. I’ve since given up doing it for two reasons; one is that I posted all the good ones…and the other is I really don’t care for hate mail.
