Much as I deplore seeing people physically fighting in real life–it’s always such a jarring and disgusting sight–I LOVE a good fight scene in a movie. Let’s watch a few this week. First up is this fabulous sequence from ‘Bad Day At Black Rock’ in which Spencer Tracy (who has only one arm) destroys Ernest Borgnine using martial arts techniques. Much as I love the movie I’ve always wished that Andre Previn’s awful score could be removed and that the movie be re-processed in black and white–the color photography is very MGM of its period which means it looks just like ‘Kiss Me Kate’ (or ‘I Love Melvin’ for that matter). Nonetheless Tracy is so good–and the script so taut–that it survives my measly criticism with ease.
