Preston Sturges brilliantly manic 1943 comedy ‘The Palm Beach Story’ begins with a credit sequence which interweaves several complex plot strands that make little to no sense to the viewer at the beginning of the film but which later on become clearly part of the intricate storyline. Shot and edited in mock-silent comedy style, and accompanied by an exhausting rendition of the William Tell Overture, it was as confounding, strange and weirdly inventive a credit sequence as had ever been accomplished up to that time. It’s damn hard not to want to watch the rest of the movie after experiencing it and if it weren’t for the pending Buffalo Bills game, I would most certainly be watching it tonight. Perhaps I’ll give the Bills the first half and see if its worth staying with the game…
