Every week should end with a spirited, delightful dance number. That’s my new resolution. Which brings us to the fabulous, criminally-underrated Gene Nelson. Nelson is as athletic as Gene Kelly (and also a lot taller) and his light-hearted spirit adds an infectious quality that the often overwrought Kelly sometimes doesn’t capture. You can see Gene K. working hard to impress you. You can only see Gene N. delighting in the dancing itself. Here’s a number from a 1950 movie called ‘The West Point Story’ which, though I haven’t seen it, I believe has something to do with the military academy West Point and may even be set there. Maybe I’m wrong. What Nelson can do with a cane and no other props is astonishing and will send you into your two-day holiday feeling idiotically happy.
