Over the next several weeks a retrospective of the work of the great American director George Stevens is taking place at Film Forum here in New York City. This past Sunday I was able to attend the opening day’s film which was a superb documentary about Stevens made by his son George Stevens, Jr,. George was there for a Q&A afterwards with FF’s venerable programmer Bruce Goldstein. So, in honor of this terrific retrospective I present you today with George Steven’s appearance on ‘What’s My Line’, from 1956. His epic masterwork ‘Giant’ was about to open in theaters when he made this appearance. Alas, due to the format of the game show, we only get to hear him say two words–‘yes and no’–in answer to the questions from the panelists who are trying to guess his profession. I wish the show had added at least a short interview segment following the dopey game but no such luck. Nonetheless, enjoy!
