RCA IN LIVING COLOR

It’s hard for us to realize from this distance how miraculous color television must have been when it finally arrived in the early 1960s–though why they used the term ‘living’ color has always puzzled me. After all, it’s not actually living…it’s being broadcast from another remote location. And does the phrase ‘living color’ imply that there is such a thing as ‘dead color’? Anyway the little informational video from 1961 that I’ve posted above is more about RCA’s newest invention of the time, the remote control. I grew up with one that was simpler than the one shown but remember the satisfaction the depressing the clunky ‘plungers’ that one used to change channels. The one above is oddly detailed and is not so far off from the ones we now have, though current remotes have lettering that is much smaller and harder to read. Your welcome! I like the model hugging and caressing the television and I even rather like the wooden cabinet that houses the TV. And that’s all the time we have for today’s pointless little journey into television history.

  1. In the mid 70s, I was working at Turner broadcasting and Atlanta. The company bought its first remote mobile unit, and on the side of the truck we had three stripes of color, red, green and blue, and under the Turner Broadcasting logo we had a phrase that boasted “COLOR TV“. That was a big brag back then ha ha
